We are looking for a Engineering Team Leader

Salary: £26.28 an hour

Location: Bridgwater, Somerset

Shift: 4 on 4 off shifts including days and nights 6am-6pm & 6pm-6am

Permanent contract

JDR is recruiting for a Engineering Team Leader to work in a manufacturing site in Bridgwater, Somerset.

Provide hands-on leadership and coordination for the engineering team, with a strong focus on extrusion and thermoforming assets. The Team Leader works alongside technicians on shift, ensuring breakdowns are addressed quickly, preventative maintenance is completed, and documentation is disciplined and accurate. The role builds team capability, drives a solutions-focused culture, and role-models the behaviours, standards, and leadership required for the next level, while remaining firmly on the shop floor and delivery focused.

TEAM LEADERSHIP & COORDINATION

• Lead the daily engineering shift team, setting tasks, priorities, and expectations.
• Provide coaching and on-the-job mentoring, ensuring team members follow correct procedures.
• Ensure safety, compliance, and housekeeping standards are met every shift.
• Act as the first escalation point for shift-based technical and personnel issues.

HANDS-ON ENGINEERING SUPPORT

• Actively contribute to troubleshooting and repairs of extrusion and thermoforming lines.
• Ensure preventative maintenance is carried out to plan and recorded accurately.
• Support root cause analysis (RCA) and ensure corrective actions are documented and closed.
• Be visible on the floor – leading by example in technical standards and safe practices.

DOCUMENTATION & DISCIPLINE

• Ensure all engineering activities are logged (breakdowns, PMs, corrective actions).
• Drive compliance with maintenance schedules and sign-off procedures.
• Support the Manager with audit readiness by maintaining accurate documentation.
• Promote a culture where “if it’s not written down, it’s not done.”

SOLUTIONS FOCUS & CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

• Encourage the team to focus on fixing issues properly, not quick patches.
• Identify recurring problems and escalate improvement ideas to the Manager.
• Support small improvement projects, ensuring learning is documented and shared.
• Contribute technical insight into planned upgrades and modifications.

SUPPORTING THE MANAGER

• Provide clear updates on shift performance, breakdowns, and completed work.
• Input into skills development plans for the team.
• Deputise for the Manager in day-to-day matters when required, while recognising escalation boundaries.

COMPETENCIES/SKILLS

• Proven ability to lead a team hands-on in a manufacturing/engineering environment.
• Skilled in troubleshooting extrusion and thermoforming processes.
• Strong discipline in maintenance and compliance documentation.
• Practical problem-solver with a solutions-first mindset.
• Strong communicator, able to give clear direction and feedback.
• Able to balance doing the work with leading others to do it well.
