JDR Recruitment are recruiting for a Grounds Maintenance Operative to work for a recycling company based in Darwen

Job Purpose

To maintain the grounds, landscaped areas, access roads, and perimeter boundaries of a busy recycling and waste management facility in Darwen. The successful candidate will ensure the site remains safe, clean, compliant, and presentable while supporting environmental and operational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, pruning, and weed control across the site.
  • Maintain landscaped areas, site entrances, access roads, drainage channels, and boundary fencing.
  • Undertake litter picking and general housekeeping of external areas.
  • Remove vegetation and overgrowth from operational areas to maintain safe access and visibility.
  • Operate and maintain grounds maintenance equipment including mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters, chainsaws, and leaf blowers where trained and authorised.
  • Assist with seasonal maintenance activities including leaf clearance, gritting, snow clearance, and drainage maintenance.
  • Carry out routine inspections of grounds and report defects, hazards, or environmental concerns.
  • Support site improvement and environmental projects.
  • Assist with general labouring and maintenance duties when required.
  • Complete daily equipment checks and ensure machinery is maintained in a safe working condition.
  • Adhere to all Company Health & Safety, Environmental, and Quality Management procedures.
  • Wear and maintain appropriate PPE at all times.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, or a similar outdoor environment.
  • Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance machinery and hand tools.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety procedures.
  • Physically fit and capable of carrying out manual work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual, and self-motivated.

Desirable Requirements

  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • PA1 and PA6 Pesticide Application Certificates.
  • Experience working within industrial, recycling, waste management, or manufacturing sites.
  • Chainsaw certification.
  • Ride-on mower experience.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Basic maintenance or property repair experience.

Working Conditions

  • Regular lifting, carrying, bending, and walking.
  • Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required to meet business needs.

Monday – Friday 7:30am-5:30pm

Pay Rate

£13.35 per hour
