The Rise of Values-Based Hiring

Date Posted: Tue Aug 2025

I’ve seen first-hand the significant shifts in recruitment strategies over the past few years. The traditional approach, which focused heavily on a candidate’s direct experience and rigid qualifications and skills, is becoming a thing of the past. Today, more clients are embracing a new, more effective model: Values-Based Hiring. It’s a values-led approach that prioritises a candidate’s potential and cultural alignment over their bullet pointed skills list on their resume, and it’s proving to be a breakthrough for long-term retention.

The Rising Demand for Values Alignment

This shift isn’t just a business strategy but a response to a changing workforce. More recent generations entering the workforce, particularly Gen Z, are focused on aligning their personal values with their employers’. They’re not just searching for a job - they want a purpose-driven organisation they can believe in, one they can feel passionate about being part of. Clearly communicating who you are as a company helps attract talent who already see themselves as a great fit, making it more likely that both sides will feel confident and satisfied in starting a new career journey together.

Shifting to Values-Led Recruitment

Values-based hiring is a big shift in mindset. Instead of asking “Can this person do the job now?”, we ask “Does this person share our company’s values and do they have the potential to grow with us?”. This approach opens the door to a much wider talent pool, including individuals from diverse backgrounds who may not have a traditional career path but possess the exact qualities that define a great long-term employee.  With my call centre clients I’ve seen this pay off multiple times. By focusing on attributes like integrity, teamwork and a customer-focused mindset during the interview process, they are hiring people who are passionate about the company’s mission. The result? These employees are more engaged, motivated and less likely to leave. They feel a sense of belonging and purpose that goes beyond showing up for a pay-check.

Enhancing Training to Nurture Talent

The shift to a values-based model is not just about changing how we hire, it’s about rethinking how we train. Once a new hire is on board, the company’s investment truly begins. My clients are focusing on enhancing their training academies to become upskilling and professional development powerhouses in their industries.   Building on that raw talent and values that were identified in the recruitment process, they are equipped to teach specific technical skills in a way that’s both engaging and supportive. This approach not only equips new hires with the necessary tools to succeed but also reinforces the message that the company is committed to their long-term growth.   Ultimately, this dual strategy of hiring for values and then upskilling has led to a more stable, committed and high-performing workforce. It’s a win-win: employees feel valued and invested in, and companies benefit from enhanced retention and a culture of shared values.

JDR in Action

Let’s talk tangible examples, I recently worked with a contact centre client in Manchester that was struggling with attrition rates of near 30%, after implementing these values-led practices their attrition dropped to 0%. This isn’t just a happy coincidence - it’s a direct outcome of building a workforce that is aligned with a company’s core principles and investing in their future by training and upskilling them once hired.
